Restorative massage springs from the following foundation of concepts and experience:
In-depth, ongoing study of the structure and function of the physical body via undergraduate and graduate coursework, including specialized massage techniques such as medical & orthopedic massage, in addition to college anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, etc.
Appreciation for allied models and methods of healing (e.g. acupuncture, osteopathy, homeopathy, and nutrition, to name a few). I believe there are appropriate times for alternative care and for mainstream treatment. Optimal decision-making about those choices depends on education, discernment and involvement on the part of both practitioner and client/horse owner.
Understanding the powerful role of thoughts and emotions in manifesting illness & health, trauma & recovery, struggle & ease. Compassionate enlightenment is my central goal when addressing malfunction or dysfunction in a client’s body, outlook and self-care.
Passion for identifying the energetic connections and wholeness of life. When reviewing a client’s history, condition and therapeutic progress, I assess all relevant clues, even spirituality, asking, “what is the ultimate cause or purpose of this issue?” Though the answer to this question may not be immediately apparent, I believe it is vital to every client’s lasting recovery. The body has a unique, eloquent voice, and it deserves to be heard and heeded. I assist clients to see the “bigger picture” of recovery using a style particularly empathetic to issues of trauma, abuse or neglect.
Commitment to my own personal evolution. My personal healing journey is a jewel in its own right, but it is also a resource for my clients. Rather than wander outside my scope of practice into the realm of psychotherapy, when a client expresses interest and receptivity, I share appropriate wisdom gleaned through observation and experience. Two of the strongest models I offer to perceptive clients are self-forgiveness and a sense of faith in the Divine Plan.
Focus on teamwork and interdependence. Clients and health care professionals alike need to appreciate the diversity of insights and techniques available today, rather than seek or cling to one expedient answer. My goal is to work as an ongoing part of your health care team and refer you when appropriate to other practitioners who can accelerate or clarify the healing journey. I seek to educate clients on the benefits and limitations of massage and encourage confident client decision-making through an appreciation of diverse options.
